‘Not So Plain Jane’

A new contemporary portrait of Jane Austen by British artist Simon. At its heart the aim of creating this painting is to deal with the issues of ownership and appropriation of the great author’s image, whilst also offering an artwork that updates the plain fundamental likeness of an icon to which we are all so familiar. 2017 felt an appropriate time to explore these ideas as it marks the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death and it feels significant to place this artwork in geographical locations that claim a form of possession over this potent literary figure. As Bath has strong ties to Jane Austen’s heritage and holds firm as a prominent footnote in the author’s tragically short life, it presents a wonderful opportunity to show ‘Not So Plain Jane’ at Fringe Arts Bath.

Simon’s process as an artist is about engaging with the viewer, bringing them closer to the surface of his paintings and with this project he would like to present an artwork to the public in the hope of encouraging further connection, communication, discussion and debate.
