The artists’ collective studioxyz have taken inspiration from Nevil Shute’s novel ‘On the Beach’, a phrase from T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Hollow Men’ and influenced by the apocalyptic Mayan prophecy for 21st December 2012, created a show in response to the theme ‘the end of the world’.
Interpretations of the title vary from; a study of the liminal space between life and death; what would remain of the world were humanity to vanish tomorrow and an investigation into the cycle of destruction and rebirth.
The new work made by studioxyz members under this common theme, paintings, video and installation, give an idea of how differently individuals can interpret a title. By bringing work together a dialogue of visual language is set up as each piece is interpreted in the light of understanding its neighbour.
The artists have raised questions about how we live and interact with our planet, how we measure and value time, what we value in our society and how, in the absence of humanity, the earth might continue to exist.
