Sexy Ham

Transposing the digital image obtrusively into the gallery Luke Carl Smith has evolved the image into a squelchy, larger than life slice of meat. Provoking, apparently, a sexy allure in the object... the transmutation of the subject to the image, and then removing this from the constraints of the frame does appear to have somewhat anthropomorphic effects. Smith comments on the exchange between the digital and temporal and questions the experience of both.

Luke Carl Smith comments on his work in the exhibition:

"My practice investigates the circulation and embodiment of information, in particular, its oscillation between virtual and real spaces. In an attempt to categorise information as a species, comparisons are drawn between technology, algorithms and other digital natives to living organisms in order to map out their evolutionary patterns and approximate future realities.

Sexy Ham: Digital images continually delve between physical and virtual environments, the more frequent this boundary is crossed the more mutations the image attains. Sexy Ham is an ongoing process of oscillation, a selected image of greasy sliced ham is given a physical embodiment, a temporal flesh to only then be regurgitated back into the digital realm. Compressed, mutated and spawning multiple versions to add to its ongoing genealogy Sexy Ham questions whether digital images have the capacity to transcend their own flat state and develop through the process of evolution a neo-flesh that is free from the material constraints that govern our mortal world."
