Artists George Herms and Betye Saar and MOCA Chief Curator Helen Molesworth discuss assemblage. Assemblage, a practice of art production that combines disparate everyday objects and materials to create new meanings and forms, rose to popularity among American artists following World War II.

“A way of making art in which various things which are traditionally non-art materials are brought together in a variety of ways, but they have at their core , a GLUE“ -

Helen Molesworth - Former Chief Curator @ MOCA

“MAKING ART OUT OF EVERYTHING“ -

“Sometimes objects don’t want to be next to each other and they are rejected , so I am mostly LISTENING to the objects telling me what to do “- George Herms- Artist

“I have always considered myself a hunter or gatherer, hunting for things … and gathering things. In a way I am like a ‘recycler’.. I recycle their [the materials] STORY into my story“ -

Betye Saar - Artist
