With all artworks packed in a case, The Inch by IN:CH travelling exhibition gets underway in Bath where they will be unpacked for display before spiralling their way across the SW.

The artists involved have each packed their artwork in a case from which the piece emerges to be displayed. Ranging in size, scope and materiality, the pieces reflect the diversity, and sometimes unexpected, work the artists are involved in. The cases are an integral part of how the work looks, and the story behind: why it was chosen, for instance, and where it was sourced. Each has its own character – some are large with the work spilling beyond its frame; while others are smaller, more intimate. Some request the viewer to stand back and wonder, while others invite them to peer closer and look between.

Starting their journey in a garage is a fitting analogy for what this project is about. As it suggests a place of potential, a pause between journeys. A symbol, maybe, of where travel is waiting; where there is expectation of what is to come or maybe of reflection of what has just been. But additionally, as the planning and execution of the Inch by INCH project has been formulated via Zoom, finding a garage has enabled us not only to gather our cases and test out our plans, but also to see how the luggage will fit.
