dǎ (打) máo (毛) yī (衣) - day 1 of 2

  • Newark Works, Unit 2.03 2 Foundry Lane Bath, England, BA2 3DZ United Kingdom (map)

“打毛衣” (“knitting sweaters”) references domestic labour in 1980s–90s China. This 2 day live installation reactivates knitting socially and materially through metal, with continuous public knitting performances emphasizing process, openness, and transformation.

"Jing BAI is a multidisciplinary artist working across visual art, film, theatre, and writing. Through a fusion of realism and surrealism, her practice explores identity, memory, feminism, and the human condition, with a focus on social structures and marginalised voices.

She is currently developing *Knitting Sweaters*, an ongoing installation series that reactivates knitting as both material and conceptual framework. By replacing yarn with unconventional materials — including metal, plant matter, and recycled plastics — the work examines labour, care, intergenerational memory, and the transformation of matter over time."
